Background

Kunming, also famous as the "Spring City" because of its weather,  is the capital of Yunnan Province and the central city of the Central Yunnan urban agglomeration. Kunming was located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, with an overall elevation that descends stepwise from north to south, featuring a mix of basins and plateaus. The city encompasses three major river basins: the Jinsha River, the Nanpan River, and the Red River. It has a subtropical plateau monsoon climate, characterized by mild weather, no scorching summers, and no severe winters.

Location and Region

Kunming is situated in the central part of Yunnan Province, between longitudes 102°10′ to 103°40′ E and latitudes 24°23′ to 26°33′ N. It stretches 237.5 kilometers from north to south and 152 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area of 21,012.54 square kilometers, which is approximately 5.3% of Yunnan Province's total area. It is one of the central cities in the southwestern region. Kunming is at the intersection of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Zone, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Area, and the Pan-Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, serving as China's forefront and important gateway to South Asia, Southeast Asia, and even the Middle East, Southern Europe, and Africa. Its unique geographical advantage connects it to multiple regions: it links eastward through Guizhou and Guangxi to the coast, passes north to Sichuan and Chongqing towards the central plains, extends south to Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, and connects west to Myanmar, reaching India and Pakistan.

Climate

Kunming has a low-latitude subtropical plateau monsoon climate. Influenced by warm and humid airflow from the southwest Indian Ocean, it features long sunlight hours, a short frost period, with an average annual temperature of about 15°C, approximately 2200 hours of sunshine per year, and an annual precipitation of 1450 mm with more than 240 frost-free days. It exhibits typical temperate climate characteristics with mild weather, no scorching summers, and no severe winters. The average annual temperature is around 15°C, with the warmest monthly average around 19°C and the coldest around 8°C. Historically, the extreme annual temperature reached a maximum of 31.2°C and a minimum of -7.8°C. Rainfall throughout the year is distinctly divided into dry and wet seasons, with May to October being the rainy season, accounting for about 85% of the total annual precipitation. The dry season from November to the following April accounts for only about 15%.
Kunming's annual temperature variation is relatively small, with average temperatures around 15°C. The warmest monthly average is approximately 19°C, while the coldest averages 8°C. The extreme temperatures historically range from a maximum of 31.2°C to a minimum of -7.8°C. Due to its suitable temperature and humidity, prolonged sunshine, and short frost duration, flowers bloom year-round, and vegetation stays evergreen, which contributes to Kunming's reputation as the "Spring City."
Daily temperature differences are significant, with strong UV intensity, creating an experience of four seasons in a single day. In winter and spring, daily temperature differences can reach 12 to 20°C; in summer, it may be around 4 to 10°C. Main climatic features include: 1) Warm and dry in spring with significant daily temperature variation; 2) Mild summers with concentrated rainfall, comprising over 60% of annual precipitation, often causing flood disasters; 3) Cool autumns with reduced rain and rapid cooling, averaging about 2°C lower than spring; 4) Mild winters with ample sunshine and little rain; 5) Clear distinction between dry and wet seasons, further reinforcing the climate's characteristics.
While Kunming is located in the subtropical region at latitude north, most of its areas experience mild summers devoid of severe heat and mild winters sans intense cold, earning the city its celebrated title of "Spring City."

Climate Dietary Culture

The residents of Kunming primarily consume rice as their staple food, while those from the north favor wheat products. In rural mountainous areas, maize remains a staple for some. Typical cooking methods include stir-frying, deep-frying, stewing, pan-frying, and braising, emphasizing a tender texture with an oily taste in vegetarian dishes. Most families regularly stock pickled foods, such as marinated tofu, fermented soybeans, mustard greens, and winter vegetables. Kunming cuisine mostly uses fresh local vegetables and fruits, with winter dishes often featuring stewed beef and lamb. A characteristic local food is "shao'er kua," small pieces of dough served in lamb or beef soup, while summer dishes frequently include wild mushrooms, often cooked with garlic for detoxification.

Specialities

Kunming's specialties include Guandu Rice Noodle, Guandu Steamed Bun, Xundian Dried Beef, Yiliang Roast Duck, Qidian Pickled Tofu, Kunyang Marinated Duck, Qibu Tofu, Mushroom Oil, Yunnan Ham Mooncakes, Shilin Milk Cake, Kunming Everlasting Flowers, and edible roses from Bajie. The Miao are known for their weaving and embroidery, while the Bai's distinctive culture is reflected in their traditional dancing and architecture. Each ethnic group celebrates its traditional festivals, like the Yi Torch Festival and Hui’s Eid. Due to long-term interactions with the Han people, many ethnic groups have embraced Han traditional festivals like the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, and some ethnic celebrations, like the Torch Festival, have been accepted by the Han. The annual "March 3 and the West Mountain Festival" is a provincial intangible cultural heritage event, representing Kunming's tradition of celebrating spring outings and flower viewing.
